1998 Novurania 400 DL Dinghy Fuel Tank Replacement

For those of you with the infamous fuel tank leak in your old style DL400 Novurania dinghy this is how to have it professionally replaced.

The guy that did the work is Jaime Camacho JC Boatworks 714-865-9927.  He has some yard space over at Kozwel Boatworks in Santa Ana.

This is what the dinghy looked like in 2022.

The tubes are removed and the tape lines are where the cuts are made.  Nothing like cutting a dinghy in half.

Dinghy cut in half.  Note the anchor locker wall still in tack.

Picture of the top of the fuel tank.  Fuel suction line and fuel gauge connection wires.

Lifting the fuel tank out.

Fuel tank removal.  Note the top half of the dinghy to the left and turned around.

Fuel tank removal.  Note: the anchor locker and fuel fill area cut away.

Novurania encases all these tanks in foam.

The fuel tank on completely out.

The hole in the fuel tank.

New drain pipe from anchor locker to stern.  Note the tab on the side by the blue tape.  That will be loaded with epoxy later to bond the top to the bottom.

New fiberglass for fuel tank bed.

New larger access port.

New battery box shelf.  New fuel tank well prepped.  Note the tabs on the side.  When the top is dropped back down those tabs will be full of thickend epoxy and make the bond hold between the top and the bottom.

New fuel tank installed.

N&J Fabrication Long Beach CA did the fuel tank.

Ask for Nacho.  He does amazing work.

Another picture.

Closer up picture of the fuel connection area.

This gives you a really good shot of just how the dinghy was cut in half.

This is the fuel connections.  Wait till you see how it was glassed in later.

Getting the stern end of the top prepped.

Getting the bow end of the top prepped.  Everything is down to core fiberglass.

The whole Novurania top ready to be recombined with the bottom.

Top and bottom reattached with fairing compound applied.

Glassing in the anchor locker.

New access panel is so much larger than the old one.  Novurania you should take note of this.  The position has also been moved a bit so as to provide better access to the sender and fuel pickups.

Battery box area glassed in.

Look at how smooth that connection is.  You won't be able to tell that this dingy was cut in half.

Great connection and tabs.

Smothing out for paint.

Another view of the battery box.  Remember this is the vertical line that was cut.

The other side with fairing compond.  Getting smoothed out for paint.  I should say gel coat, because that is what is going to be applied.

Another shot of the port side of the boat.

Note how the fuel fill connections are now completely glassed in.

A picture from the bow showing the full port side of the dinghy.

The finished product.  This is the dinghy completely back together and gel coated.  It's beautiful as you will see in the following pictures.  This is probably nicer that when it came out of the Novurania factory.

Price / Cost in 2022 dollars was $6,000.00

My hats off to Jamie Camacho for an excellent job.

The bow anchor box section.

The port side middle.

Aft port side.

The new batter box section under the helm seat.

Fuel filter and battery shutoff.

New bilge pump.  Note new cutouts in stringer so water will drain correctly.

Middle seat cooler section with my old portable fuel tank.  And for those of you with Novurania middle seats that is an ice chest with drain hole.  So load up the bear and fizze drinks for the girls and have a good time.

Notice the tabbing on the fuel fill and overflow pipes.  It's like a brand new anchor locker.

New anchor locker.

Bow shot with the anchor locker open.

Bow lifting harness.

Bow section with fuel fill.

Starboard side.  Note the throtle assembly is being replaced in the next stage.

Battery box looking from the starboard side.

Access panel.

Mounts for the battery on/off switch and fuel water separator.  Could of just given the seat a little love here.

Novurania with new tubes installed.

Tradewinds Inflatables did the tube job.

Another picture of the tubes

20240310  I am selling the crane because I have a new one.  So this is how it operates.  I am asking $10,995.  That is a 30% discount from a new one.  I will only discuss if your standing in front of me.  If you are looking for me to ship, take funny money, etc...  I'm not interested.  This is listed on Craigslist in Los Angeles area.
